Perhaps best known for his early collaborations with the late Joseph Beuys, Ken Friedman is considered to be the youngest member of the “classic” Fluxus group. From 1966 through 1975 he served as Director of California-based Fluxus West, while Beuys, in turn, served as Director of Fluxus “Zone” West. Friedman led a complex and rich career, beginning as a graphic designer. In the 1960s, he studied with typography teachers in Basel, Switzerland, who were pioneering a radical shift away from the rigid lines and clear rules that had distinguished the look of modern graphic design for decades.
